the Master by SURFACEART the Master by SURFACEART
I post this in tribute to legendary artist Gene Colan who we lost today at the age of 84. His unique style of storytelling and art itself revolutionized the way that the comics genre is seen today. His outstanding body of work on Marvel's "Daredevil" and "Tomb of Dracula" were amongst the most memorable in the company's history. His influence and inspiration to artists and the comics buisness in whole is imeasurable.

been a lot of activity on facebook-but yeah I am personally a bit shocked on the lack of observance of this gifted artist....ooooh but GOD forbid if Justin Beiber wre to croak tomorrow-the world would $#@!in shut down! >:(
-Such is the legacy of a comic book artist-but Gene Colan was much more.

have to agree with ya there Jim, I remember years ago when the great Gray Morrow passed away-hardly a ripple was caused, don't know if its a generational thing or popularity or obscurity or the possible fact that despite the comic related blockbuster films we have today that people enjoy but the majority of todays fans have no idea of the genre itself, its origins/history and the talented people that made them extremely popular in the first place....other great artists that passed fairly recently...Alex Toth, George Tuska. I guess the only good thing to count on and I can only hope this will include my work is that someday someone will look at an old Colan "Dracula", or "Daredevil" issue or art piece and be supremely touched and inspired and dare even ask about the long gone artist who created said piece...I would consider myself extremely blessed if my work was to be so appreciated...

A sad lost of a masterful artist. His superb draughtsmanship to one side, he gave shadows texture and depth and darkness a personality all it's own.
